Christmas Through Lowell: Celebrating 32 Years of Holiday Magic and Community Spirit

The holiday season is just around the corner, and with it comes the cherished annual event, Christmas Through Lowell (CTL). It happens this year from Friday, November 15, to Sunday, November 17.

Organized by the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, CTL has become a hallmark of holiday charm, attracting visitors from across Michigan eager to soak up the festive spirit, admire local craftsmanship, and discover one-of-a-kind treasures.

Since its modest beginnings over three decades ago, Christmas Through Lowell has grown into an experience that stretches beyond shopping. What started as a small gathering hosted by Jody Haybarker and friends—designed as a fun shopping event for women during the opening weekend of deer hunting season—has blossomed into a community-wide celebration.

For the past 20 years, the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce has taken CTL to new heights, weaving churches, businesses, and an ever-expanding lineup of new homes into the event’s fabric. “Adding new homes each year keeps Christmas Through Lowell fresh and exciting,” says Chamber Executive Director Shannon Kennedy, who credits the community’s enthusiasm for CTL’s enduring success.

The event now features more than 60 homes and businesses, each decked out with holiday spirit and brimming with creativity. More than 350 artists and crafters from around the area will showcase handmade gifts and decor. Expect a remarkable range of items, including folk and fine art, vintage finds, reimagined treasures, handcrafted furniture, seasonal decorations, ceramics, leather goods, crocheted and knitted pieces, and much more.

Planning CTL is no small task; organizers begin preparations in January, and by May, excitement ramps up as vendors and homeowners start work to ready their spaces. For many artisans, the event represents months of dedicated crafting.

The winter weather can add to the challenge, but Kennedy notes that even snowstorms can’t keep the most dedicated shoppers away: “Our ‘die-hard’ fans still come out to support their favorite stops.”

This year, CTL introduces eight new locations, including The White Rooster, Scripted Expressions Studio, and Nera Wix Candle Bar. A highlight stop is “Homespun Holidays,” hosted by this year’s featured artist, Karin Jelsma. With 18 crafters filling six rooms, Jelsma’s home offers everything from antiques and folk art to homemade baked goods and holiday décor.

Beyond spreading holiday cheer, Christmas Through Lowell is a significant economic driver for Lowell, as it gives local businesses a financial boost leading into the slower winter months.

“It’s a chance for local artists and makers to shine and for our businesses to feel the support of the community,” says Kennedy. This blend of festive atmosphere, historical charm, and friendly hospitality makes CTL an ideal way to kick off the season.
