We previously looked at the top 10 articles for 2024, but what about just for the month of December?
Here are the top five stories from December 2024, based on website views.
5. Meet the Two Police Chief Finalists
Lowell Police Chief Chris Hurst is retiring in March, and the City of Lowell conducted a search to find his successor. The two finalists both hailed from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. The fifth most-read article on Lowell’s First Look in December was this overview of both candidates. Ultimately, Dennis Albert was chosen for the job.
4. ThisThatOther: Where Artisans and Commerce Will Come Together in Lowell
Artisans who would like to have a retail presence in Lowell but can’t afford their own storefront might find a home at ThisThatOther. The business, which is targeting a February opening date, will be a vendor mall with space for about two dozen artisans. Look for it on Main Street in the former location of Milo’s Kid’s Consignment + Boutique.
3. Year Ends Without Resolution to LAS Lawsuit
Our final article of the year didn’t need long to make the top five list for the month. A lawsuit was filed in June alleging that Lowell Area Schools and its administrators had violated the rights of an area parent. This article provides the background leading up to the lawsuit, what it alleges and how the district has responded.
Why wasn’t this article published earlier in this year? Simply because there are only so many hours in the days, and it wasn’t until the slower holiday season that we had time to delve into the mountains of paperwork associated with the case.
2. A Historic Transformation: The McGee Building in Downtown Lowell
Speaking of Milo’s Kid’s Consignment, it is moving to the McGee Building in 2025. The shop’s owner – who also owns WearForward – is bringing her two businesses together under one roof. However, before the businesses move into the McGee Building, which formerly was home to Larkin’s Restaurant, it needs some renovation. This article highlights that renovation and was the second most-read story on Lowell’s First Look in December.
1. Aldi is Preparing to Come to Lowell (for Real This Time)
When we published our April Fools’ Day article this year, we had no idea that Aldi was actually looking to open a store in Lowell. Over the summer, we learned that plans were afoot to bring to the discount retailer to town, but no one was talking on the record about it – until now.
While everything looks promising, residents need to be aware that it isn’t a done deal yet. The store still needs a final site plan approval from the Lowell Township Planning Commission. But if all goes well, that could happen as early as January.
