Mark your calendars and grab your gear because the 2025 River Trail Triathlon is set to take over Lowell on Saturday, June 21st. The now annual event features a scenic and adventurous course that captures the natural beauty and spirit of the community. The race kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Flat River boat launch on the Lowell Riverwalk.
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a first-time racer, this triathlon has something for everyone. With two divisions — the Tri-Hard (1-mile kayak, 7-mile bike, 1.5-mile run) and the more intense Tri-Harder (2-mile kayak, 16-mile bike, 3.5-mile run) — racers of all levels can find their stride. And for those who want to specialize, relay teams and free agent signups let you tackle just your favorite leg of the race.
Want to race in style?
Early bird registration ends May 31st, and signing up before then guarantees you a custom race bib and an exclusive event T-shirt. Head to the official race website for all the details and to sign up. You’ll also find course maps, elevation info, and everything else you need to “tri” your best.
Packet pickup will take place the evening before the race, on Friday, June 20th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lowell Chamber of Commerce as well as before the race, starting at 6:30 a.m.
Community-Powered and Purpose-Driven
Founded in 2023 by Grant Hengesbach and inspired by the area’s natural beauty, the River Trail Triathlon is quickly becoming a beloved local tradition. This year, the event’s team is stronger than ever with Jodie Seese stepping in as Sponsorship Coordinator and Sydney Johnson leading the charge on social media.
Hengesbach is proud to emphasize that the “triathlon is about more than just racing — it’s about giving back. This year, 100% of the net proceeds will benefit Lowell Community Wellness with a special focus on supporting mental health services and programs for local youth.”
More Than Just a Race
Participants won’t be the only ones having fun. Spectators are encouraged to gather near the Riverwalk boat launch where all legs of the race start and finish. Want to catch racers on the move? Cheer them on from the Fallasburg Covered Bridge, along the North Country Trail, or down Grindle Drive — just be sure to time it right!
And after the final foot crosses the finish line? Stick around for the awards ceremony hosted on the iconic Lowell Showboat, where medals will be handed out to top finishers in each age and sex category. First-time participants (affectionately called “Dri-athloners”) will also receive a medal to celebrate their courage and determination.
Expect well-stocked aid stations, medical support, and post-race refreshments courtesy of M-21 Nutrition, so racers can refuel and relax in style.
Volunteers Needed — Be Part of the Action!

This event thrives on community support, and organizers are calling for volunteers to help make race day unforgettable. From course mapping to equipment unloading, guiding racers to cheering them on as they finish strong — there’s a role for everyone.
Sign up through the race website or the River Trail Triathlon Facebook page.
Road Notes and Weather Warnings
Expect limited road access on northbound Flat River Drive from 8–8:45 a.m on June 21st, and any race day updates will be posted in the Lowell Community Chatter Facebook group. In case of severe weather, the event may be delayed — but there’s no makeup day. Registrants can, however, roll their entry forward to a future year if needed.
The River Trail Triathlon is more than a race — it’s an experience, a community celebration, and a chance to see Lowell through a new lens. Whether you’re in it to win it, want to cheer from the sidelines, or lend a helping hand behind the scenes, this is one summer event you won’t want to miss.
Now go on — tri something new!
