Letter to the Editor: Founding Fathers Supported Separation of Church and State

This letter is in response to State Senator Thomas Albert’s public statement “this is a Christian Nation” at his Biggby office hours on March 14.

My great grandmother emigrated from Meissen, Germany. I can recall family gatherings from the 1950’s where elderly family members spoke only Dutch or German. They came to America for its religious freedom and democracy.

History teaches us that before our government it was thought that God put all his power in the hands of monarchs to rule over the majority.

Our founding fathers did not believe that Heaven was a kingdom. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, others were Deists that believed God put a little bit of His authority in each person so that “we the people” could come together to decide what was best for all. “Separation of church and state” was the best way to end a thousand years of European Christian wars from the Crusades to the Spanish Inquisition and more.

That is why my father and his 5 brothers all served in combat zones during World War 2. They fought fascism so that the “Enlightenment” nation envisioned by our founding fathers could live.

Benjamin Franklin responded to the question what form of government was created stated “a republic if you can keep it”.

Every generation is tested. My prayer is that we are up to this test.

Respectfully submitted,

Jack Misner
