The Restless Viking: Lime Island State Park

This article was originally published on August 12, 2021 on The Restless Viking website.

Poppins and I explore Michigan’s latest state park – Lime Island State Park.

It has a long history as a trading place, lacrosse field, farmstead, resort and coal refueling dock. There are lime kilns, remnants of industry, quaint cabins and plenty of trails to hike. Located in the Saint Mary’s River, it was a strategic place to service shipping traffic.

Lime Island has a school house, modest museum and camping platforms. It is a harbor of refuge. The Department of Natural Resources has plans to expand Lime Island. But, it remains one of the most difficult parks to reach in the system as it requires a boat to access. It is a fascinating place to stay and explore.

Chuck and Martha Hayden, aka The Viking and Poppins, enjoy going on adventures off the beaten path. They also like to share their explorations with others. The Viking is a retired expedition leader while Poppins is a retired teacher. The two offer independent views of their journeys showcasing places, people, and cultures as they explore the world.
