Survey on Nutritional Goals of Lowell Residents is Now Live

We NEED Your Opinion!

LOWELL, MI, February 28 — A Grand Valley State University Public Health student is conducting research by surveying Lowell community members on their nutritional goals. The purpose of this research is to identify goals around eating healthier and determine residents’ interest and receptiveness to various nutritional programs that could help achieve those goals. The short, three minute survey taken on a cell phone or computer consists of 10 questions and invites the participant to share their ideas and suggestions. All survey data is anonymous.  Survey results will be used to identify programs and services designed to assist families and individuals in preparing healthier meals and snacks, thereby meeting their intended goals.

“The partnership with GVSU allows our community access to this type of innovative research, where we collaborate with public health students to create these data driven programs,” notes Jodie Seese, the Director for the LoWellness Health Initiative. “Knowing what goals our community is working toward, we can design programs that are convenient and accessible. Plus, community based programming brings people together and research shows that pairing up with friends is key to reaching health related goals.”

The Grand Valley State University Master of Public Health Department has been involved in research and bringing evidence-based programs to the Lowell community since 2014.  Data from the LoWellness Health Survey led to the creation of Wellness Camp- an after-school program for elementary students that featured the theme of Eating Better, Moving More and Smiling Often.  Over one hundred students participated in Lowell Wellness Camp, a program that received the Hometown Hero Award from the Michigan Department of Health Human Services in 2020.

Maria Moss is a health and wellness specialist and was one of the coaches for Lowell Wellness Camp.  “Everyone is trying to eat better, but families are busy and preparing healthier food can be time consuming.” Moss is a GVSU public health master’s candidate and is conducting the research survey of nutrition goals in Lowell. “The survey will allow us bring programs that help residents meet their individual health goals.  It could be a class on how to cook once, but get three meals for your family or taste testing seminars that get kids to try new foods. Maybe you just want more plant based recipes or ways to get more whole grains in your diet. Take the survey and help us help you!”

The survey is available through March 31thClick here to take the survey.
