Public Invited to Block Party Celebration for Gilda’s Club Lowell and Lowell Senior Neighbors

We received the following press release from Gilda’s Club Lowell and Lowell Senior Neighbors.

LOWELL, Mich. – Lowell Senior Neighbors Senior Center, First Congregational UCC of Lowell, and Gilda’s Club Lowell are hosting a Block Party open house on Tuesday, July 18, to celebrate a new collaboration that has brought the three organizations together.

Senior Neighbors, a nonprofit that serves to enhance the lives of senior citizens, and Gilda’s Club Lowell, a cancer and grief support organization, relocated to the First Congregational UCC of Lowell from the historic Hale House on Hudson Street.

“We are excited to be in our new home at First Congregational UCC of Lowell with Senior Neighbors, which has been an incredible community partner with us for the past 14 years,” said Wendy Wigger, Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids president. “Staff at First Congregational UCC of Lowell welcomed us in their space with open arms, making this a smooth transition for our own staff members and those we serve in the Lowell area. Together with Senior Neighbors, we invite the public to visit our new location and enjoy an evening of free food, entertainment and family activities, and speak with Gilda’s Club Lowell and Senior Neighbors staff about our programs as well as additional community partners.”

The Block Party celebration will feature a free hot dog dinner, refreshments, dessert, entertainment by the Easy Idle Band, family activities, and gifts for the first 50 kids. A brief program will be held at 6 p.m. to recognize Gilda’s Club Lowell, Senior Neighbors and First Congregational UCC of Lowell coming together to provide community opportunities for area residents. To commemorate the partnership, the three entities will plant an evergreen tree where community members may tie on messages of hope, vision, memory and healing.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this moment with the community as Senior Neighbors embarks on a new chapter in our 50-year history. Our new home at First Congregational UCC of Lowell provides a larger space to better cater to our residents’ needs and expand our programming,” said Nicole Driesenga, Senior Neighbors centers and volunteer supervisor. “First Congregational UCC of Lowell has been extremely supportive throughout our move. This is what community is all about – supporting each other. It is a pleasure to continue our faithful partnership with Gilda’s Club Lowell as we, together, embark on a new beginning at First Congregational UCC of Lowell.”

“Our congregation is delighted to welcome these new partners into our space,” said Shannon Jammal-Hollemans, pastor of First Congregational UCC. “Their goals in serving this community so closely align with our own. We believe that these partnerships will only grow each of our abilities to serve the people of Lowell well.”
