Scenes from Lowell: Love Our City 2023 Edition

You may have seen them last week — folks in red shirts doing good deeds all over town. They were trimming trees, painting dugouts and clearing paths.

Why?

Because they Love Our City.

Love Our City is the new name for Love Week, a initiative of Impact Church that brings together its members and crews from First Baptist Church to spruce up the town wherever needed. The new name reflects that the love of Lowell extends beyond one week, and church members are active in community projects all year long.

However, like in Love Weeks past, Impact Church and First Baptist Church focused on one week in June — June 19-23, to be exact — to get as much done as possible in a short period of time. And get a lot done they did. The numbers for 2023 are as follows:

  • 23 projects
  • 345 volunteers
  • 1,081 hours

All that hard work meant that these dugouts at the baseball diamond behind Burch Field went from drab…

…to fab.

And despite the heat, volunteers were all smiles while doing it.

If you’ve been up at the Cooper Woodland Trail this spring, you know the winter weather meant plenty of sticks were in the path…

…as was a tree that had fallen.

With the help of a leaf-blower and many small hands…

…paths went from this…

…to this.

First Baptist Church also had people ready to lend a helping hand, and this year, they tackled projects at the Lowell Airport, Creekside Park and a Vergennes Township cemetery.

Impact Church was also at Lowell Airport where, thanks to a large contingent of young adult volunteers, they made short work of repainting this hangar.

Other projects involved trimming trees and raking leaves at Cherry Creek Elementary School…

…beautifying the grounds at Fountainview…

…and helping with the garden beds at Main Street Housing.

They took this worn observation deck behind Cherry Creek Elementary School…

…gave it a facelift…

…and had plenty of fun in the process.

Other projects included painting the ramp at the Lowell Area Historical Museum…

…refreshing the observation deck at Lowell High School…

…building a new structure at the dog park…

…edging the track at Lowell High School….and much more.

As is tradition, it was sweltering hot for most of the week, but that didn’t stop volunteers from showing up.

Our thanks to everyone from Impact Church and First Baptist Church who worked so hard last week. And although he doesn’t want recognition, credit goes to Bob Rogers for organizing everything.

We love that you Love Our City!
