Chair-A-Tee Profile: Meet Jean

Jean Mucha heard about Chair-A-Tee from Kimberly Gill.  Gill has been instrumental in the idea behind the event and making it a reality.  The two women participate in an exercise class in Byron Center where Gill mentioned the event to Mucha who said her friend was “very persuasive”.

The Designer on Her Design
Mucha has lived in Byron Center for 29 years.  She wanted to participate in Chair-A-Tee because of raising money to help those experiencing cancer.  She also had personal incentive as a breast cancer survivor herself.  Almost 10 years ago she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer.  After a lumpectomy, removal of 16 lymph nodes, and radiation treatments she was free of cancer.  She’d go on to take proactive medication for five years.  “I strongly urge women to be advocates for themselves. I was lucky, because my cancer was caught early during a routine yearly mammogram.” says Mucha.

Mucha is one of many artists who is inspired by nature.  “Growing up on the west coast of northern Michigan, I have always been awestruck by the beauty and the power of Lake Michigan. Selecting an idea for the design, I knew I wanted to incorporate both warm and cool colors. I wanted to convey a message of joy and hope with the use of bold, bright colors.” she says of her design choice.  She refers to it as “whimsical nature”.  She continues, “The design depicts a warm sun, cool green fields, along with amusingly playful flowers.”

An artist her entire life, Mucha was drawing on walls as a toddler.  She’d decorate those same walls with drawings she made.  She says she was the kid making a mess with art supplies.  This love of art at an early age Wyoming Public Schools after “37 artful years” as an elementary art teacher.

Jean Mucha’s chair can be seen at Main Street Inn.  Stop by and place a bid there through August 18.  Then on August 22-26 all of the chairs will be on display at LowellArts.
