We received the following information from Flat River Outreach Ministries about their September volunteers of the month.
For September we want to recognize our Backpack Team Victoria Fleenor, Jackie Tousley, Deb Kooy and Sharon Ellison. The Backpack team, pictured below, (1st photo below: Jackie, Deb and Sharon. 2nd photo: Victoria) started meeting in the spring to plan, organize and implement the backpack program for school year 2019/2020.
Victoria and Jackie started volunteering in 2015 and Deb and Sharon joined the team in 2018. Together this group put in about 90 hours this year alone! They helped secure needed supplies and volunteers to make sure over 300 children started the school year off right with backpacks and school supplies. They also delivered 5 backpacks with supplies to each of the four elementary schools for those students who may show up without the supplies they needed.
Many additional volunteers help with the Backpack program including packing done by Lowell Family Dentistry, haircuts by Great Clips, and volunteers that help out the day of distribution. Donations come from many folks in the community along with Fifth Third Bank- Grand Rapids, ATT, and Lowell Verizon.
