Gubernatorial Candidate Makes Campaign Stop in Lowell

Councilmember Marty Chambers (l) and gubernatorial candidate Michael Brown (r)

Michael Brown made a campaign stop in Lowell last night. The Stevensville resident is one of more than a dozen declared candidates seeking the Republican nomination for the 2022 governor’s race.

Brown was at the Main Street Inn from 5:30-7pm to meet with local voters and then headed to the City Council meeting to introduce himself there as well. His appearance in Lowell was hosted by Mayor Mike DeVore and Councilmember Marty Chambers, but both men say that shouldn’t be taken as an endorsement.

“We’re just trying to give people a chance to meet everyone,” DeVore says. The two hope to host State Senator Winnie Brinks and U.S. Congressman Peter Meijer in the coming months as well. Both currently represent the City of Lowell although their districts will change for the 2022 election.

In the meantime, the meet and greet event with Brown provided an opportunity for people to stop by and speak with the candidate one-on-one to ask questions and share concerns.

Candidate: Local Ties, Focus on Rural Issues

As a 34-year veteran of the Michigan State Police and a former Berrien County Commissioner, Brown believes the state is headed in the wrong direction and that prompted him to run.

While it’s a crowded primary field, Brown says his understanding of the state helps set him apart from other candidates. “I know the state from top to bottom and from the east to the west,” he says, adding: “What I do best is bring high performance people together.”

Brown was raised in Grattan Township and attended Belding High School. “I grew up milking cows,” he says, and supporting farmers will be one of his priorities if elected.

“Unfortunately, in this administration, agriculture doesn’t get a seat at the table,” according to Brown. He plans to create a county-by-county priority list that will pinpoint the needs of local agricultural communities.

Other priorities cited by Brown include reducing the state income tax, bolstering education and trade school programs, addressing unfunded mandates that affect local governments and supporting rural law enforcement through the creation of scholarships and other initiatives.

“I’m really happy to be in Lowell today,” he said during the event. “I love every small town in Michigan.”
