Lowell Education Association Summer Academic Scholarship Applications Due Soon

Each year Lowell Area Schools elementary and middle school students have the opportunity to be awarded money to be able to pay for a portion of an educational summer camp.  Applications must be filled out and returned by Friday, May 3 for consideration this year.

Lowell Teachers Give Back

Each year Lowell Area School (LAS) staff members have the opportunity to give a portion of their pay back to the community.  Last year a total of 103 individuals contributed to the Lowell Education Association (LEA) general fund or one of two scholarship funds.

Contributions totaled $4,150.  From this total high school students received individual scholarship.  $500 was given as a scholarship to one LEA dependent. Another $500 was awarded for LEA Leadership.  The Sue Burt Scholarship in the amount of $750 was given to a student looking to pursue a career in education.  Additionally, $1,000 was split between two students in the special education program through LAS. Finally, 26 elementary students received a combined total of $670 and 16 middle school students shared a total of $730 last year.

The Application

This year’s application must be turned in by Friday, May 3 to Lindsay Bredin (contact information is available on the application form).  Summer camps must be educational in nature. Applications for sports camps will not be considered. Past camps students have attended include Wittenbach camps, Computer classes, FFIC Heritage Camp, Kendall School of Design, John Ball Zoo School, Camp Invention, Meijer Gardens Summer Camp, GRPM Camp Curious, and Civic Theatre Arts Day Camp.

A portion of the application should be filled out by the student looking for a scholarship.  He or she must provide a statement about interest in a particular camp. Students who will be in K-8 at the beginning of the next school year are eligible for a scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded up not to exceed 50% or $100 of the camp fee.  The amount awarded each year is dependent on the number of applications received.  It is up to parents to fill out applications forms for the specific camp a student will attend, keeping in mind the individual program’s deadlines and availability.  Should a student decide not to attend a camp and received a scholarship, it is requested the funds be returned to LEA so that another student may have the opportunity to attend an educational camp.

It will take approximately 2 weeks for applicants to find out whether or not an award was received and in what amount.  It is up to parents to ensure the program for which money was award is attended.
