5 Most Popular Articles on Lowell’s First Look for November 2022

A pair of letters to the editor, election results and a late month entry all made the top five articles for November. Plus, a regular guest column makes its first appearance, buoyed by a pick-up from an online news aggregator.

Here were the most-read articles, based on website views, during November 2022.

5. The Restless Viking: Mining in Michigan

The Restless Viking isn’t a new feature on Lowell’s First Look, but this is the first time it’s hit the top five. This weekly guest column follows Chuck and Martha Hayden as they explore various places off the beaten path. This particular edition was full of pictures from copper country in the UP. It was also picked up by a news aggregator website which helped drive extra traffic its way. If you haven’t read The Restless Viking yet, you can catch up on all their adventures using this link.

4. Lowell Area Firefighter Profile: Kevin and Mandie Jones

Published right under the wire – on Nov. 29 – this article still managed to garner enough views to breeze past most of the other articles we published last month. It’s the latest firefighter profile and highlights Kevin and Mandie Jones, a married couple who are both committed to keeping our community safe. If there is something we’ve learned over the years, it’s that Lowell residents are enthusiastically supportive of our fire and police forces.

3. Letter to the Editor: A Letter to the Board of Vergennes Twp.

During its November meeting, the Vergennes Township Board passed a “Resolution of Support for Law Enforcement and to Protect the Health, Safety and Welfare of Vergennes Township Children” on a 4-1 vote. The resolution states that the Kent County prosecutor is concerned the recent passage of Proposal 3 invalidates age of consent laws and that, by passage of the resolution, the board “expresses its official disagreement with such an application of the provisions of Proposal 3.” We received two letters to the editor disagreeing with the passage of the resolution, and this one received the third-most views of the month.

2. Letter to the Editor: We Can Do Better

The letter to the editor about the Vergennes Township resolution wasn’t the only one to get a large number of views last month. One submitted prior to the November election lands in the No. 2 spot. In it, a resident expresses concern about campaign mailings, an earlier letter to the editor about books in school libraries and what they say is a lack of response from the school district to parent concerns. The writer shared her picks for the Lowell Area Schools Board of Education and encouraged others to support a “diversity of thought.”

1. Election 2022: General Election Results for Lowell, Michigan

Landing in the No. 1 spot was our wrap-up of the 2022 general election results. We know you can find overall election results on any news site so we try to add a little more value to our wrap-up by breaking down the votes by municipality. We don’t know about you, but we always find it interesting to see how Lowell voted compared to the rest of the state or region and how votes differ even locally between the City of Lowell and its neighboring townships.
