City of Lowell Citizens:

The future of the city-owned property referred to as 990 N. Washington St. has been a hot topic for the Lowell City Council for nearly a year. This property is completely surrounded by Lowell’s popular Scout Park, and any use of the 990 property inconsistent with the park’s unique natural values would have a negative effect on Scout Park and its users, including the Scouts who have been there over 50 years. We have now reached the point where City Council will soon be deciding the fate of the nearly 4 acres of key park road frontage and in-held city property, which encompasses acreage on both sides of North Washington St. As most City residents are aware, letters were sent out in their recent water bills, asking residents their opinion as to the future of the uncommitted 990 property. This could potentially include sale and development, forever compromising this unique natural area. On the other hand, the Lowell Scout Park Association has advocated for the inclusion of these acres to Scout Park–preserving this land for future generations. What was initiated back in 2007 by visionaries like former council member Sharon Ellison and others now stands on the threshold of reality over the course of two scheduled public hearing dates at the Lowell City Hall. The first is Tuesday, Feb 21 at 7pm and the second Monday March 20 at 7pm.

Your attendance at both meetings is very important. If you are physically unable to attend, please send a letter or email to [email protected] and ask that your letter be read out loud and entered into the minutes. This will assure that the council will hear your concerns, as well as others in attendance. Your voice needs to be heard at both meetings, and the City Council will be weighing residents’ resolve and commitment to this cause.
