LowellArts Launches New Classes, Concert Series

Lowell residents disappointed that the Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts are over can take heart in knowing more good music is right around the corner. LowellArts is launching its UnPlugged House Concerts series that will run from October through May.

Those concerts, along with a line-up of classes, are two ways the local arts organization is planning to make full use of its new gallery on Main Street.

New Space Means New Opportunities

Those who visited the old LowellArts location on Ottawa Street by King Milling know space was at a premium there. However, the new gallery on Main Street is open and airy, offering plenty of room for the group to experiment with new exhibits and programming.

“That was the really big thing with the move,” says Lorain Smalligan, executive director of LowellArts. “We wanted the gallery to be a flex space.”

As designed, the gallery can accommodate a stage and seating with minimal adjustments to an exhibit. “Then, the artwork becomes a backdrop to the stage,” Smalligan says.

Plus, there are rooms in the back of the gallery intended to host a variety of art classes. “It was amazing how many people brought up theater classes,” Smalligan says of a community survey conducted to find out what services were of interest to residents. That’s one request that will be filled by LowellArts, starting with a youth/teen improv class that begins on October 14, 2017.
