Scenes from Lowell: I Have a Dream Edition

This past Monday, students at Cherry Creek Elementary School participated in a Change 4 Change walk in honor and celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  The previous week, classrooms learned why Dr. King has a day on the calendar dedicated to him.  Fourth Grade teacher Lisa Camfferman, wanted to spread some positive thoughts throughout the school and proposed the idea of students learning about how they can make a positive change.

The idea was a hit with Principal Shelli Otten.  Kim Lum, Brook Beaufait, and Kathryn Smith each represented a grade level while teaming up with Camfferman to work out details of the project.   The week before MLK Day students learned about civil rights and positive change.  A Google Doc of ideas was created so teachers could pull information and activities to fit their grade level.

On Friday, January 12 students attended an assembly to learn about the Child Healing Center, which is a place kids with compromised immune systems can go and play without having to worry about unsanitary conditions.  Melissa Block, who is involved with the organization spoke the kids alongside her daughter, Claire Block.  Melissa wrote about Claire being cancer free as one of last year’s Pink Arrow Perseverance stories.

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day the entire student body at Cherry Creek Elementary School walked to Lowell Middle School and back.  It was amazing to see approximately 500 kids lining the street as they walked.  Some students and staff at the middle school watched and cheered.  Some vehicles, include a semi-truck, honked horns as they traveled down Foreman.  And the Lowell Police Department blocked the road so students could cross safely.

It wasn’t merely about walking for a cause.  Each student carried a handmade sign which stated how he or she could make a positive change.  The personal declarations included not giving up, standing up to bullying, and being nice.

Cherry Creek is not new to service projects.  They’ve collected money for water filters, worked on the Soldier’s Stockings project, and collected items to send to schools in Texas after the hurricane just to name of few efforts.  Students took pride in what they came up with for how to make a positive change.

All classrooms are also collecting change from now until Jan. 26.  All monies collected will be donated to the Children’s Healing Center.
