The Restless Viking: Neebish Island

This article was originally published on September 30, 2021 on The Restless Viking website.

Neebish Island is a little known island in Michigan in the St. Mary’s River. Less than 100 people live there year around. It is a short ferry ride. Only one store and campground on the island. It has some interesting aspects, some caused by freighters traveling very close to the shore.

It is surrounded by shipping lanes (one of the busiest) and is often under siege by wave wash. Like many towns and island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it has its own micro culture and a unique history.

We talk to some locals, get a tour and look at some fascinating places, including an abandoned “Adventure Camp” that closed in 1993. We explore the ruins and talk to the former owner that still stays at the camp.

Chuck and Martha Hayden, aka The Viking and Poppins, enjoy going on adventures off the beaten path. They also like to share their explorations with others. The Viking is a retired expedition leader while Poppins is a retired teacher. The two offer independent views of their journeys showcasing places, people, and cultures as they explore the world.
