36th Annual West Michigan Art Competition Opens at LowellArts

LOWELL, MI, March 15, 2022 – LowellArts announces the 36th Annual West Michigan Art Competition highlighting outstanding artwork by Lower West Michigan artists. 208 artists submitted their work to be juried. 98 artists had their work selected to be on display at the LowellArts Gallery, 223 W Main St, Lowell, MI 49331 from March 5 to April 16. Gallery hours are: Tues-Fri 10am-6pm and Sat 12-5pm. More information can be found at:

About the Competition: The competition was open to all visual art media by artists 18 yrs. and older. Artists could submit one piece to be juried. The artists also must reside in one of 25 eligible counties in West Michigan. Eligible West Michigan counties included: Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Cass, Calhoun, Clare, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ionia,Isabella, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Muskegon, Montcalm, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Ottawa, Saint Joseph, Van Buren.

About the Juror: Bill Davis is Professor of Art at Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art where he teaches in the photography program. He has an MFA from The Tyler School of Art and has a BFA from Ohio University. Bill Davis’ work is archived in over 25 museum or private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Davis managed Pavel Banka’s Prague studio and taught Photo History at Umprum (Usti) before receiving grants, commissions, or fellowships to work in Las Vegas, the Amazon, Peru, Paris, Spain, Korea, Vermont, Michigan and exhibit in London, Prague, Madrid, Edinburgh, Orange, Australia, Leeds, and Kiev. Since. 2011, he has received awards and project funding from the WMU Climate Change Working Group, IEFDF, FRACCA, The Kalamazoo Arts Council, and a Sustainability Project Grant via the Milton Ratner Foundation to photograph light pollution.

The juror selected 5 monetary award winners and 6 honorable mention awards from the pieces on display. Award winners include:
