August was a busy month with the Kent County Youth Fair, Pink Arrow Game and the first day of school all occurring within the span of a few weeks. These events also dominated the top stories for the month.

The following were the most-read articles, based on website views, during August 2021. And if you’re wondering what happened to last month’s Police Beat, that unfortunately didn’t make it onto the publication calendar amid all the back-to-school busyness. However, it will be back this month with a wrap up of both July and August cases.

Lowell ended the month of August with a bang. Lowell Area Schools kicked off their school year on August 24, and then two days later, it was time for the annual Pink Arrow Game. Our photo wrap-up of both events was the fifth most-read article on Lowell’s First Look in August 2021.

4. Kent County Youth Fair Returns with Full Week of Fun

It’s hard to imagine summer without the Kent County Youth Fair, but that was essentially the case in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic meant most fair activities couldn’t happen last year. This year, the fair was back in all its glory – carnival rides, live entertainment, barns filled with animals and more. Now in its 14th year, the Pink Arrow Game is a night that brings together community members from all walks of life to raise awareness and money in support of those on a cancer journey. Although the color pink is associated with breast cancer, funds raised by Pink Arrow help people whose lives have been touched by all types of cancer. An overview of this year’s event takes the third spot among the most-read articles in August.

Can you believe this is now the third month in a row that this Scenes from Lowell has made the top five list? When we drove down Main Street taking photos of construction sites, we had no idea how helpful people would find this article. It’s on our to-do list for September to publish an updated version with new photos and any new construction taking place.

1. School Board Recap: Larry Mikulski Honored, 70 Minutes of Public Comments

The August Board of Education meeting was moved to the Performing Arts Center in anticipation of a crowd, and the public did not disappoint. For 70 minutes, people took to the microphone to share their concerns about various matters. Some argued passionately in opposition to masks in schools while others felt just as strongly that they should be required. Critical Race Theory and the district’s diversity, equity and inclusion program were also hot topics. While most of the meeting was devoted to public comment, that wasn’t the only thing on the agenda. The Board of Education also honored Larry Mikulski, who passed away earlier this year, with the Marsha Wilcox Community Service Award.
