Scenes from Lowell: 2021 Kent County Youth Fair Edition

The 2021 Kent County Youth Fair invites people to “Stirrup Some Memories” this week at what could be the final fair to be held in the City of Lowell. If all goes well, the 2022 fair could be held on new fairgrounds off Cascade Road in Lowell Charter Township.

If you haven’t made it down to Recreation Park, located off S. Hudson Street, you still have today and tomorrow to enjoy the fair festivities. The event wraps up on August 14, and here’s a look at what you’ll find.

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic meant a pared down fair, but everything — including carnival rides — is back this year.

There is a mix of rides that should appeal to both the younger and older set.

If rides aren’t your thing, those age 18 and older can try their luck at Bingo in the Lowell Moose Tent.

There are a few new entertainment options this year. One is the All Star Barnyard Review which is offering hourly shows from 12pm-8pm each day. The shows rotate through pig racing, animal capers and a clown show.

Gellyball is also new this year and offers a paintball-type experience without the painful and messy paintballs.

Did we mention fair food? Yes, almost all your favorite food vendors are back this year.

While the rides and food are fun, the main purpose of the fair is to give county youth the opportunity to show their animals and projects and possibly earn some money by auctioning them off.

Our county youth raise an impressive variety of animals that they bring to the fair. There are dairy and beef cows…

…chickens…

…ducks…

…sheep…

…horses…

…and goats. Plus pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, alpacas, turkeys and more.

There are also thousands of still exhibits on display. These include artwork, insect collections, baked creations, crafts and countless other projects.

The fair runs through August 14 with the final main event being a performance by The Kari Lynch Band at 4pm. At 6pm, the animals will start leaving, and the fair ends at 10pm.

Editor’s note: This article was updated at 2:15pm on 8/13/21 to include the fair’s end time.
