Community Events Happening in June

With the school year coming to an end and the unofficial start to summer upon us, it’s time to fill your calendar with the numerous events happening throughout the community during the month of June. Below you will find information about some of the activities happening in the upcoming weeks providing fun and education for all ages. While this is a relatively comprehensive list, there are certainly other things going on in the community that we have not highlighted.

Keep tabs on things happening within the community by visiting our event calendar. Do you have an upcoming event you’d like us to list? Send us information via email at least two weeks before the event is scheduled and we’ll get it added.

World Milk Day at the Farm – Wednesday, June 1

Location and Time: Dairy Discovery at Swiss Lane Farm; 4pm – 7pm

Celebrate World Milk Day with an all you can eat cereal bar, music, bounce house, and yard games. There will also be a cornhole tournament with prizes and a milk toast at 6pm.

Alpha Care Center Run for Your Life 5k & Family Walk – Saturday, June 4

Location and Time: East end of Impact’s parking lot; 9am registration; 9:30am race start

Registration will be 9am- 9:30am at the east end of IMPACT church parking lot. Please park in designated area, look for the registration tent, and enjoy a run or walk through the gorgeous Riverfront Park. 5K will begin at 9:30AM. Families are welcome to walk any time after registration to complete the race route and honor their pledge sheets.

Lowell Pride Authentically You – Saturday, June 4 

Location and Time: Lowell Riverwalk; 10:30am – 10pm

The event will celebrate all of our community and the things that make us unique, so bring the family down and represent what is Authentically You! The free event will include vendors, Drag Queens, a fashion show, a panel discussion, and so much more!

Fest for the Nest – Saturday, June 4 

Location and TIme: Red Barn Market; 11am – 2pm

The goal of this benefit is to continue raising awareness and funds for Wildside Rehabilitation and Education Center and educate people on what or what NOT to do when coming across a sick or injured Bald Eagle. All funds raised will be donated to Wildside Rehabilitation and Education Center to continue efforts to rehabilitate Bald Eagles for release back into the wild!

Admission – includes lunch and wildlife interactions including a Bald Eagle and more!
$10 for Adults
$5 for Children 12 and under

Additional Tickets
$1 per Ticket
$10 for 12 Tickets
$20 for 25 Tickets

Ticketed Attractions – Bounce House, Face Painting, Crafts, Games, Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Additional Food

Veen Observatory Public Viewing Night – Saturday, June 4

Location and Time: Veen Observatory; 9:30pm – midnight

The GRAAA opens the James C. Veen Observatory to the public on select Saturdays of the month (April through October), if the skies are clear. Please call the Starwatch number (616-897-7065) for updates and the status of a particular night if the weather conditions are questionable.

Admission for public nights is $5 for adults, $2 for 17 years and younger, and free for children under 5 years of age. Public Nights are also free for GRAAA members and Grand Rapids Public Museum members!

Farmers’ Market – Thursdays June 9 – September 8 

Location and Time: Impact Church parking lot; 10am – 3pm

The Lowell Farmers’ Market kicks off its year on June 9. Each Thursday up to 30 vendors representing farmers, non-profits, and retailers will have booths. Visit the Chamber of Commerce’s website for more information.

Mermaid Storytime – Saturday, June 11 

Location and Time: Bettie’s Pages; 10am – 3pm

Celebrate Mermaids with Bettie’s Pages. There will be crafts and storytimes at 10:30am and 2:30pm. Visit the event’s Facebook page for more information.

Amigos for Monarchs – Saturday, June 11 

Location and Time: Fallasburg Historical Village (Schoolhouse); 10am – 11am

Meet and help 7-year-old Liam Lopez-Wagner or Amigos for Monarchs plant milkweed seeds to help help the Monarch Butterfly population. Seeds will be provided. For more information, visit the Fallasburg Historical Society’s event page

Yoga on the Riverwalk – Mondays June 13 – August 8 

Location and Time: Riverwalk; 7pm (no class the week of July 4th)

Lowell Community Wellness is happy to announce the return of yoga on the riverwalk.  No registration is required.  Just show up on the riverwalk at 7:00pm on Mondays during the dates noted above to join in the fun.  Any fitness level can attend just be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new activity. Cancellations due to weather or other issues will be posted on their Facebook page. 

Cost:   Suggested donation $5 per class

Tai Chi on the Riverwalk – Tuesdays June 14 – August 9 

Location and Time: Riverwalk; 7pm (no class the week of July 4th)

Lowell Community Wellness is happy to announce the return of Tai Chi on the riverwalk led by Dr. Mogor.  No registration is required.  Just show up on the riverwalk at 7:00pm on Tuesday during the dates noted above to join in the fun.  Any fitness level can attend just be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new activity. Arrow Readers on the Move – Various Dates June 14 – July 27

Location and Time: Various locations; various times (see below)

Lowell Area Schools students are invited and encouraged to read over the summer. Students in preschool through those who finished 5th grade can participate. Books can be checked out from school libraries or KDL branches. Participants take Accelerated Reader tests to earn points. When enough points are earned, prizes will be awarded.

The following dates, locations, and times will allow students to check out books, take tests (they can also be taken at home), and select prizes:

Ruff Readers – Wednesdays, June 15, 22, and 29

Location and Time: Englehardt Library; 6:30pm – 7pm

This unique read-aloud program in partnership with West Michigan Therapy Dogs, Inc. pairs kids with a trained therapy dog and their handler. Kids read their favorite book and the pooches curl up, listen and enjoy. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and secure a time slot. First come, first served.

Babysitter Training – Wednesday, June 15

Location and Time: Lowell Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall—201 N Washington; 9am – 2pm

Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe and responsible care for infants and children. We focus on leadership, safety and safe play, basic first aid, critical emergency action skills, and professionalism. Participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate upon completion. Classes are recommended for Girls and Boys ages 11-15.  Includes Small First Aid Kit. A snack and drink is provided by Lowell Church of the Nazarene. Bring your own lunch. CPR for child & infant is covered. However, children will not be certified in CPR. Class is 9am-2pm.

Cost:  $25.00 plus fees. No refunds after June 8, 2022.

Summer Concerts – Thursdays June 16 – August 25

Location and Time: Riverwalk; 7pm

LowellArts Adult/Teen Class: Needle Felted Bunny – Saturday, June 18

Location and Time: LowellArts; 12pm – 3pm

Needle felt an adorable bunny with a carrot or other veggies. These little bunnies fit in the palm of your hand, and by the end of the class, you will have one finished to take home. Class instruction will include the needle felting process, proper needle use and safety, how to create a sculptural core and attach felt pieces, as well as adding exterior wool and details. Beginners welcome, as well as those with previous experience.

Ages 10 to adult.
Cost: $40/person

LowellArts Adult/Teen Class: Continued Watercolor Series – Wednesdays June 22, 29, July 6, 13

Location and Time: LowellArts; 6pm – 8pm

This class is for those who want to improve their watercolor painting skills – all skill levels welcome. Become comfortable with watercolor painting techniques and enjoy the process of painting. Gain experience with materials, tools, techniques, colors, values and “seeing.” Enjoy a fun, inspirational, and relaxing two hours each week exploring the beauty of this medium.

Ages 14 to adult.
Cost: $133 per person for the four-week series

Kids, teens, and adults are encouraged to sign up for the KDL Summer Reading Program which runs from June 1 – August 13. More information can be found here.

Senior Neighbors Events – Throughout the Month

Senior Neighbors is located at 314 South Hudson. They have events that take place during the week throughout the month. Their schedule is as follows:
• Lunch – Each day – 12:00 pm
• Hand & Foot Card Game – Monday, Wednesday Fridays – 9:00 am
• Pokeno – Mondays – 10:30 am
• Exercise at Schneider Manor – Tuesdays & Thursdays – 10:30 am
• Bingo – Tuesdays & Thursdays – 11:00 am
• Tai-Chi at Schneider Manor – Tuesdays & Thursdays – 1:30 pm
• Bible Study – Wednesdays – 10:45 am
• Bus to Meijer – Wednesdays – 12:45 pm
• Advisory Council – 1st Monday of each month – 10:30 am
