Magdelaine Marcotte LaFramboise, fur trader along the Grand River, had a post just west of Lowell. She was successful and prosperous in her work, and is remembered and honored by the Michigan Historical Women’s Hall of Fame as the first business woman in Michigan. She spent her later years on Mackinac Island still earning a living, and caring for those on the island. She was well respected by the diverse ethnic groups living on the island. Seventy two years after her death it was said “no one ever lived at the island who exerted a greater influence.”

Our presentation will include details about her life and her influence, and will conclude with cove rage of a 2013 event on Mackinac Island that one hundred and sixty seven years after her death, still made the news.
