The Lowell Riddler: July 2023 Solution

The Lowell Riddler is back and hiding medallions in and near the City of Lowell for residents to find. Those who find the medallion will be rewarded with Lowell Bucks and bragging rights!

We have a new leader for Riddler of the Year honors! Mark Weaver (2022 Riddler of the Year) and Peggy Eickhoff Brown (2022 Riddle winner) teamed up to solve the July riddle in just 16 minutes after the third clue release. Their time is 10 minutes faster than June’s riddle solver, Christian Huisman, and captures the lead with one more riddle to go in August.

Congratulations to Peggy Eickoff Brown and Mark Weaver!

Here’s the photo of them with the medallion — the Riddler has added arrows to show the various landmarks alluded to in the clues.

The medallion was hidden in the crook of this tree here.

Clue #1
Up North we all trick or treat
Near the city treatment plant to the north
Walking around with flat feet.
Near the Flat River
Put rubber to road
Follow a road
Where it runs never slowed;
The Grand River
Yet a quiet and calm retreat.
A quiet location

Clue #2
Crooks don’t usually win,
Crook of the tree
But find one more than a twin.
Three tree trunks growing together
Near waters that ripple,
Near the two rivers
It’s leaving a triple.
The triple trunk tree is “leaving”
All answers will lie within.
Medallion is hidden in the tree crook

Clue #3
Follow the white picket fence.
The long white fencing off S. Hudson St.
East of the bridge trees grow dense.
East of the S. Hudson bridge
Where two rivers meet,
Where the Flat and the Grand River meets
A plaque and a seat.
There’s a bench and a plaque nearby
Dan Remembered years hence.
The plaque remembers Dan Wingeier

If you still aren’t sure where this location is, Lowell’s First Look highlighted it on our Instagram page back in May — having no idea that it would become a future site of a hidden medallion!

Prize: $50 in Lowell Bucks
Good at more than 60 Lowell businesses and restaurants!

The Riddler didn’t stake out this medallion hiding spot, but Peggy did provide a play-by-play about how it all went down. Here’s what she had to say:

Mark and I have been working as a team since the first clue in June. We were both there for that one on different days but both missed that one so we knew we had to work harder to find July’s.

We message each other daily on places we had checked or needed the other to check. I could only do it before work this month and Mark was able to mornings and evenings. We both were stuck on thinking it was in town in the Social District areas. To where we spent alot of time even though we had both on day one checked out ‘ Scout Park ‘ but nothing. Then thinking ‘ North ‘ ment North side of street plus ‘ North Star Antiques ‘… ‘ flat feet ‘ was Flat River or the gallery there. Treats was ‘ Red Barn ‘ since they have alot of sweets… but then we weren’t finding anything…when crooks came out on 2nd clue then we were down by City Hall thinking ‘ flat feet ‘ were police being called that in the day…plus ‘ trick or treats ‘ Sweet Season ‘ Ripple ‘ being Brookstone for babbling brook…. and I was stuck on ‘ rubber ‘ being a tree! It didn’t make sense any other way but tree so I began looking in the Crook of all the trees in town on North side. Mark wasn’t with me on this one at all until the end. Mark had mentioned ‘ crook ‘ in trees and the bend but didn’t think to much more. I was stuck on it. We looked along the Riverwalk over the past few weeks and checked about everything from Broadway St to Washington in trees and flower boxes anything public but still came up empty! We both are having fun but little frustrating as we were sure we may of had it.

While searching during this time, I also had help from my sister Lisa and my husband Mark.

Tuesday evening I had an idea around ‘ Rookies ‘ and it seemed everything fit but I was working so Mark went to town and looked in all the trees on south side of street but again empty. He still wasn’t sure on the whole tree thing.

Wednesday morning he messaged me and I mentioned looking out at Scout Park again so he journeyed there as I was busy but meeting up in town for clue 3 if he didn’t find it. Minute before noon we were at Riverwalk parking area and clue 3 was posted and as Mark was reading we both were like ” I know where that is ” so to the spot we went. Driving there we were met up with Paul Mundt and his wife Theresa all driving there. We all got out of our cars searching the memorial, the bench area and along the river. We weren’t finding anything so we all split up and I looked around the parking area looked for 2 twin trees with 3 crooks going out. Walked across the road around them and looked in the crook of one, and nothing then looked up in the second and there it was wrapped in black tape then yelled ” I found it ” so everyone could hear me. Such a rewarding feeling. We all meet up by the memorial talked a couple minutes then Paul took a picture of Mark and I together because we’ve been working together on this since day one.

Multiple cars started pulling up and we revealed we found it.

We hope everyone enjoyed this round, and The Riddler will be back for the final riddle of the year in August!
