Caydence Pawloski took on the Musical Sensory Garden as her Gold Award project for Girl Scouts. After months of planning and several more months of construction, the garden is now open. It can be found on the playground at Cherry Creek Elementary School and is open to the public when school is not in session. During school hours, students are able to visit and play in the area during recess.

From Planning to Construction

We first wrote about Pawloski in the spring when she was in the beginning stages of planning the project. She says she raised about $600 and had many materials donated in order to complete the garden. It took between three and four months to construct the Musical Sensory Garden.

“Knowing the community you are helping is a valuable resource,” comments Pawloski on what she gained from the experience. “And to learn more and explore that community it an impactful thing.”

Welcoming Space

Pawloski’s goal in creating the Musical Sensory Garden is to provide a space, especially for those with special needs, for kids to be able to meet sensory needs and improve communication skills. As a former student at Cherry Creek Elementary School, she saw a need for a quiet place for kids who may feel overwhelmed.

The garden has different colored windchimes and colorful tactile balls that kids can slide around and feel. When asked if she faced any challenges, Pawloski said knowing exactly how she wanted everything laid out took some time because what she had in her mind didn’t always translate into what needed to be done. However, she’s still proud of her work. She hopes that kids and adults who visit the space will enjoy the Musical Sensory Garden for many years to come.
